What is SGPA and CGPA?

Before jumping into the conversion, it is important to understand what these two terms actually mean and how they are different from each other.

What is SGPA?

SGPA stands for Semester Grade Point Average. It is a number that represents your academic performance in a single semester. After every semester ends, your university calculates your SGPA based on the grades you earned in each subject and the credit hours assigned to those subjects.

Think of SGPA as your report card for one semester — it tells you how well you performed during that specific period of time.

What is CGPA?

CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It is the overall average of all your SGPAs across every semester you have completed so far. While SGPA gives you a picture of one semester, CGPA gives you the complete picture of your entire academic journey up to that point.

CGPA is the number that appears on your final degree certificate and is used for job applications, university admissions, and scholarship eligibility.

What is the Formula to Convert SGPA to CGPA?

There are two formulas depending on whether all your semesters carry equal credits or different credits.

Simple Average Formula (Equal Credits)

If all your semesters carry the same number of credits, the formula is straightforward:

CGPA = Sum of all SGPAs ÷ Total Number of Semesters

Example: If your SGPAs across 4 semesters are 7.5, 8.0, 8.5, and 9.0:

  • CGPA = (7.5 + 8.0 + 8.5 + 9.0) ÷ 4
  • CGPA = 33.0 ÷ 4 = 8.25

Weighted Average Formula (Unequal Credits)

If different semesters carry different credit hours, use the weighted average formula:

CGPA = Sum of (SGPA × Credits) ÷ Total Credits

Example:

SemesterSGPACredits
Sem 17.520
Sem 28.022
Sem 38.520
Sem 49.018
  • CGPA = (7.5×20) + (8.0×22) + (8.5×20) + (9.0×18) ÷ (20+22+20+18)
  • CGPA = (150 + 176 + 170 + 162) ÷ 80
  • CGPA = 658 ÷ 80 = 8.225

SGPA to CGPA Conversion – Solved Examples

Example 1 – Equal Credits Across Semesters

SemesterSGPACredits
Sem 18.020
Sem 27.520
Sem 38.520
Sem 49.020
  • Step 1: Add all SGPAs → 8.0 + 7.5 + 8.5 + 9.0 = 33.0
  • Step 2: Divide by total semesters → 33.0 ÷ 4 = CGPA 8.25
  • Step 3: Convert to percentage → 8.25 × 9.5 = 78.37%

Result: CGPA 8.25 → Percentage 78.37% → 1st Division → Pass

Example 2 – Unequal Credits Across Semesters

SemesterSGPACredits
Sem 17.018
Sem 27.520
Sem 38.022
Sem 48.520
  • Step 1: Multiply each SGPA by credits → (7.0×18) + (7.5×20) + (8.0×22) + (8.5×20) = 126 + 150 + 176 + 170 = 622
  • Step 2: Add total credits → 18 + 20 + 22 + 20 = 80
  • Step 3: Divide → 622 ÷ 80 = CGPA 7.775
  • Step 4: Convert to percentage → 7.775 × 9.5 = 73.86%

Result: CGPA 7.775 → Percentage 73.86% → 1st Division → Pass

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Converting SGPA to CGPA

  1. Using Simple Average When Credits Are Unequal — The biggest mistake students make is dividing the sum of all SGPAs by the number of semesters when each semester has different credit hours. If your credits are not equal, always use the weighted average formula.
  2. Rounding Off Too Early — Rounding your SGPA or intermediate values before reaching the final answer leads to noticeable errors. Always keep full decimal values until the very last step.
  3. Ignoring Failed or Repeat Subjects — If your grading system includes failed subjects in the SGPA, they must also be included in the CGPA calculation. Leaving them out gives you an inflated CGPA that does not match your official record.
  4. Using the Wrong Grading Scale — Always confirm whether your university uses a 10-point, 4-point, or 5-point scale before calculating. Using the wrong scale will give you a completely inaccurate result.
  5. Confusing SGPA Sum with CGPA — Some students add all their SGPAs together and think that is their CGPA. The sum of SGPAs must always be divided by the number of semesters to get CGPA.

Why CGPA Matters More Than SGPA

  • Job Applications — Most companies and government organizations ask for your CGPA on application forms. A consistently strong CGPA signals that you performed well throughout your degree, not just in one semester.
  • University Admissions — Postgraduate programs and foreign universities evaluate your overall CGPA for admission. A single good semester does not compensate for a weak overall CGPA.
  • Scholarship Eligibility — Most scholarship programs have a minimum CGPA requirement. Knowing your accurate CGPA helps you identify which scholarships you qualify for.
  • Academic Standing — Many universities have a minimum CGPA requirement to remain in good academic standing. Falling below this can lead to academic probation.
  • Motivation and Goal Setting — When you track your CGPA after every semester, you can clearly see whether you are on the right path and adjust your study efforts accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How to convert SGPA to CGPA?

To convert SGPA to CGPA, add up all your semester SGPAs and divide by the total number of semesters. Formula: CGPA = Sum of all SGPAs ÷ Number of Semesters. If your semesters carry unequal credits, use: CGPA = Sum of (SGPA × Credits) ÷ Total Credits. You can also use the calculator above for an instant result.

What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?

SGPA is the grade point average for a single semester while CGPA is the cumulative average across all semesters completed. SGPA updates every semester and feeds into the CGPA, which reflects your total academic performance over your entire degree.

Can I improve my CGPA if my previous SGPAs were low?

Yes, you can improve your CGPA by scoring higher SGPAs in future semesters. However, the improvement depends on how many semesters are remaining and how low your previous SGPAs were. The more semesters left, the more room you have to bring your CGPA up significantly.

What is 8.5 SGPA in CGPA?

If all your semesters have an SGPA of 8.5 with equal credits, your CGPA will also be 8.5. If 8.5 is just one semester’s SGPA, your final CGPA will depend on the SGPAs of all other semesters combined.

Do all semesters carry equal weight in CGPA?

Not always. In many universities, each semester has a different number of credit hours. When credits are unequal, higher credit semesters have a greater impact on your CGPA. This is why the weighted average formula gives a more accurate result than the simple average.

Does CGPA affect job placement?

Yes, CGPA plays a significant role in campus placements and job applications especially in the early stages of your career. Many companies set a minimum CGPA cutoff — often 6.0 or 7.0 on a 10-point scale — to filter applications. However, as your work experience grows, CGPA gradually becomes less important compared to your skills and professional track record.
